Neighbourhood mediation

Origin

The Regional Neighbourhood Mediation Service was created as part of a collaboration with the LEADER Mullerthal and Miselerland local action groups which ran from 2009 to 2013.

It is based on a feasibility study carried out between October 2007 and June 2008, involving more than 500 people living in the eastern region of Luxembourg. The study revealed an interest in neighbourhood mediation, but also a willingness on the part of some residents to get involved in a voluntary activity related to mediation in the Mullerthal and Miselerland regions.

In October 2010, the Regional Neighbourhood Mediation Service was inaugurated. It comprises a team of 15 volunteer mediators and a coordinator.

In May 2013, the collaboration with the LEADER Mullerthal and Miselerland local action groups came to an end and the service secured its future thanks to subsidies from 17 local authorities. These are the local authorities of : Bech, Beaufort, Beckerich, Betzdorf, Consdorf, Echternach, Ell, Fischbach, Larochette, Lenningen, Mertert, Mertzig, Mondorf-les-Bains, Remich, Rosport-Mompach, Stadtbredimus, Waldbredimus.

In the meantime, the Service has received two awards:

How it works

What is mediation?

Mediation is ‘a process, usually formal, by which a neutral third party attempts, through the conduct of a meeting, to enable the parties to compare their points of view and to seek, with his or her help, a solution to the disputes between them’.

What steps do I need to take if I want to use the Service?

Will I have to pay?

Our service is completely free of charge.

Do I absolutely have to meet my neighbour?

Should I No, we can also practice indirect mediation. A mediator intervenes with each party, without them having to meet.meet my neighbour?

Are we still talking about mediation?

Obviously, one of the aims of mediation is to re-establish contact and communication. But it also aims to try to resolve conflicts and their origins, which also leads to a calming of the situation.

Confidentiality

All exchanges with our mediators are strictly confidential and will never be disclosed to a third party.
