The municipality of Mersch, under the leadership of Abby Toussaint, alderman for Social Affairs, is joining the ‘Super Senior’ project run by the Movement for Equal Opportunities (MEC ASBL), as is its neighbour Helperknapp. Launched in 2019, the project enables young pupils to receive tutoring from seniors in French, German, maths, etc. With a team of 50 senior citizens accompanying 202 children, the project now extends to 36 municipalities, and continues to recruit new volunteers. The two new local authorities will start providing tutoring in April 2024, after aptitude tests and training for interested senior citizens. As well as improving pupils’ academic performance, the project aims to stimulate senior citizens and provide an equitable educational opportunity. Interested candidates can contact the MEC ASBL to become a ‘Super Senior’.
